Dates and Times

I was looking at an expiry date today on the free Red Bull that Ben found for us (by way of us walking over to the Law school to get it (I'm not sure why it was free, something to do with LawSoc I imagine)) that I realised that I'm pleased that dates don't have names.

I was looking at some date like 17/03/2004 and thinking about that as the 17th of March 2004. That is easy enough to cope with I suppose, even from years and years away. I can think of the 1st of November 2010 without much trouble.

But. I couldn't tell you what day it was, a Monday, Tuesday... Sunday (turns out it is a Friday) Luckily that is not important, I can still organise things and know when that day will occur.

But if we had 365 named days, well then I think I would be screwed. "This can will expire on Footock 2005". Oh? What the hell. When is that. It would suck. Every single day with a different name would blow. I guess it would be ok if each day of the month was named, and we recycled them as we currently do with days of the week, but in general I think that numbers are more efficient, and really what the hell am I going on about?

Who cares, I'm more than a little erratic at the moment. Apparently my thesis won't write [si is a bastard] itself. Damn.

Excellent.... absolutely brilliant. This would have to one of the best procrastination stories I've heard :-)

Wow. Your thesis won't right itself? Poor, tilted essay. Perhaps we can hope that, even though askew, it may write itself...

I have no idea what you are talking about Tark. You weirdo. - Luther

the Romans didn't use dates as we know them at all. (which is odd given we stole their calendar :))

They thought of dates as centering around their festivals - the ides and the nones.

So a particular date wasn't the 12th of march it was three days before the ides of March.

Ok now bring forth the Julius Caesar puns people

why is Si a bastard? Does he have a self-writing thesis?

(an auto-authoring dissertation. that would be cool).
